Heavy Plate Girders at Westfield Shopping City, London

Jamestown Manufacturing made a major contribution to the construction of the largest urban shopping centre in Europe when we produced large steel girders for the Westfield Shopping City Extension project in Stratford, East London. Westfield Stratford City Severfield (NI) were the contractors for this 1.9 million square foot shopping centre, designed by the Buchan Group, which forms part of East London’s Olympic Park development. The design of this very big project called for oversized components; Jamestown Manufacturing were contracted to supply exceptionally large heavy plate girders, 23 metres in length and weighing 48 tonnes each

Off-Site Welding and Painting The heavy plate girders were fully fabricated and painted by Jamestown. Large heavy butt welding (100mm FPBW) was required to produce girders of the required length. The structural steel grades used were S355K2 and S355NL plate.

Fitting Like a Glove It was essential that these very large girders were produced exactly in accordance with specifications, a challenge which demanded all of Jamestown Manufacturing’s expertise and experience in precision fabrication, as well as the facilities of our technically advanced manufacturing site. Our success in meeting this challenge was recognised by Michael Moore, Severfield’s Project Manager, who described “..the 48 tonne, 20-metre-long plate girder from Jamestown fitting like a glove on site”.

ime-Scale Jamestown Manufacturing’s contribution to the Westfield Shopping City Extension project was completed on schedule in about two months earlier this year. The expansion to the development, which was given the green light in 2012 and cost in the region of £1.0 billion, includes retail space and up to 1500 new homes. This phase is currently underway.

Prestigious Award In 2011, Westfield Stratford City received the British Council of Shopping Centres’ Gold Award for an urban centre over 300,000 square feet. The shopping centre, which employs over ten thousand people and is currently visited by about 30 million shoppers every year, is a key element in the regeneration of this formerly run-down part of London.
